  • About

What are the odds that a son born to a Muslim father, raised for more than a decade in Saudi Arabia, schooled in western philosophy and psychology, and then trained in eastern mysticism, should become a resolute Christian and ambassador of the gospel? Small odds indeed, when counted by human probability. But Dr. Mateen Elass sees this prelude to his  ministry as witness to the amazing power of God to find and call His children to service-regardless of the odds.

Mateen was the second of four children born to a Syrian Muslim who had married an American while studying at the University of Wisconsin. Some years after Mateen’s birth, the family moved to Saudi Arabia where his father worked as an oil company executive. During his early teens Mateen began a search for God, largely through reading. For six years he focused on eastern mysticism and meditation including a stay at an ashram in India. Yet his nagging questions, Who is God? How can I know him? remained unanswered.

God guided Mateen toward an answer to those questions by bringing him into contact with genuine Christians. Edmond faith community celebrates pastor

    By&#;Carol Hartzog
The Edmond faith community expressed appreciation during a Sunday reception for the Rev. Mateen Elass at First Presbyterian Church in Edmond.
The Rev. Elass has not only influenced Edmond, but has been a leader in the metro area in establishing communication lines between Muslim and Christian communities. His next mission is to reach more Muslims with the Christian gospel.
His influence was evident from those who hugged the Elass family and said thanks in a reception line, to the prepared remarks made to the after-church gathering.
Bev DeVries spoke of the Rev. Elass helping her with one of her students at Southern Nazarene University – a Muslim.
“(Mateen) taught me to be a friend is far more important than confronting,” said DeVries, who hosted the student in her home and counseled with Elass what to serve and what to say that would be most gracious and inviting.
The budding teacher from Saudi Arabia plans to return to her home country to teach her fellow country men and women English.
The Rev. Elass served the First Presbyterian congregation eight years, and served previously for dozens of years at other churches throughout the United States. His next call is to the “Voice of the Truth,” based in Colorado S
