Richard “Dick” Zokol’s playing career is highlighted by successes as an amateur, collegiate and professional golfer; member of Canada’s 1980 World Amateur Team; and winner of the 1981 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Born in Kitimat, BC but grew up in Vancouver, Richard joined the Marine Drive Golf Club as a junior member in 1970. Richard “walked-on” to the Brigham Young University Golf Team in 1977 then captained BYU to the 1981 NCAA Championship (Division I) at Stanford University. He would turn professional later that year and it wasn’t long before he claimed his first professional victory, the 1982 British Columbia Open. Zokol spent 22 years competing on the PGA TOUR and has two career victories – the 1992 Greater Milwaukee Open and the 1992 Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic. Other professional victories include the 1984 Utah Open as well as the 2001 Canadian PGA Championship. Richard Francis "Dick" Zokol (born August 21, 1958) is a Canadian professional golfer who has played on the Canadian Tour, PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour, winning at least one event in each venue.
Amateur career
[edit]Zokol was born in Kitimat, British Columbia. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and was the captain of the 1981 NCAA championshipgolf team. He was also an All-American selection in 1981, on the Second Team.[1] He was a teammate of future fellow PGA Tour players Rick Fehr, Keith Clearwater and Bobby Clampett; he was Clampett's roommate for three years. He won the 1981 Canadian Amateur Championship, in a one-hole sudden death playoff over Blaine McCallister.
Professional career
[edit]In 1981, he turned professional and joined the PGA Tour later in 1981. Zokol had 20 top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events during his career, including two wins in 1992 but only one that is considered official. His best finish in a major championship was T14 at the 1993 PGA Championship.[2]
