A complete artist who produces installations, photographs, videos, sculptures and tapestries, Piotr Uklanski is a leading figure of the international contemporary scene. Beyond their eclecticism, his works question our society's tropes through an ironic, provocative approach.
Trained as a photographer, Piotr Uklanski seeks since the 1990s to play with the conventions and codes that regulate artistic practices. The resulting, unexpected works often draw on popular culture and the collective psyche. Some are emblematic of the art of the late 20th and early 21st century, such as his dancefloors. Curator Philippe Vergne said that “Piotr Uklanski's art is about good and bad taste... [Dance Floor] focuses on his ironic parentage relationship with Modernism, in particular Carl Andre and Dan Flavin.”
The Piotr Uklanski artworks held in the Pinault Collection were first presented in 2006 at the Where Are We Going? exhibition at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice.
