Growing up in a house furnished with the complete written works of Agatha Christie made me a fan of the whodunnit genre from a young age. My mum, an unabashed fan of criminal narratives and detective stories, made sure I was familiar with the figure of Hercule Poirot and, eventually, I too became a fan. While we've long spent joyful evenings sharing our love for the adventures of Belgium's most excellent fictional investigator, we don't always agree about this entertainment.
For instance, our idea of who the perfect on-screen Poirot differs significantly. Her heart belongs to David Suchet's book-faithful incarnation, while I prefer Peter Ustinov's joyful take on the same character. Poirot History: Which Poirot For You, Mon Ami? Finney, Ustinov, Suchet or Branagh? Which is Your Favorite?
When the first trailer came out for Kenneth Branagh’s new adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic Murder on the Orient Express, I thought, I REALLY want to see that. This was a new feeling for me, as I was not a particular fan of the classic Sidney Lumet film by the same title, I don’t think I’ve ever actually read the book, and Hercule Poirot was never among my favorite of any of the detectives or amateur sleuths that Agatha Christie created (I’m really more of a Miss Marple gal, although I will accept Tommy and Tuppence in a pinch).
I blame the masterful use of the song “Believer” (by Imagine Dragon) in the trailer. Come on. Doesn’t that song just put you in a “big movie surround sound” kind of mood?
But I digress. I’ve now seen the movie, but I’m not here to review it for you. Or, rather, I can give you my thumbnail review: it’s terrible, and yet I enjoyed it. This might have something to do more with the fact that it’s been about a year since I’ve been able to see a movie in the theater. If you want a slightly more in-depth take on the film, I would suggest checking out theserev
