Television presenter and archaeologist. Born in Renfrew, Oliver grew up in Ayr and Dumfries before studying archaeology at University of Glasgow and graduating in He went on to train as a journalist, working for the The Scotsman, The Herald, The Guardian, The Edinburgh Evening News and The Daily Record. His television career began with his appearance in Two Men in a Trench () for the BBC, which examined the history and archaeology of British battlefields with his friend Prof. Tony Pollard (b. ). Oliver has gone on to present television series such as Coast (), The History Detectives (), A History of Scotland (), A History of Ancient Britain () and Vikings (). He has also presented Coast Australia () and Coast New Zealand ().

Early life and education
[edit]Oliver was born in Renfrew[5][6] and raised in Ayr and Dumfries, where he attended Dumfries Academy and then the University of Glasgow. He obtained an MA (Hons) in archaeology and then worked as a freelance archaeologist before training as a journalist.[7]
