      100 years of sisterhood

A sorority who pioneered the black Greek life in Alachua County celebrated a major milestone.

Members of the Delta Sigma Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. attended its centennial celebration at the Wyndham Garden Hotel at 2900 SW 13th St. on Saturday.

“It’s such an honor to be a part of their legacy,” said Sabrina Williams, the chapter president. “We’ve made a lot of changes in the community because of them.”

It was a sold-out event where about 380 tickets were sold to city officials, friends and guests from the ‘Divine 9,’ which is a group of historically black fraternities and sororities.

“We’re looking forward to continue making a change in our communities,” Williams said. “We’ll be busy. That’s what we signed up to do. We’re honored to serve.”

The gala was a fundraiser to support local service activities and scholarships for college-bound students in Gainesville and Alachua County.

The sorority has initiatives such as Z-HOPE, which is short for Zetas Helping Other People Excel and Finer Womanhood Month, which is celebrated the last week of February through the entire month of March to give back to the community.

“This joyous occasion comes once in a lifetime,” said Ian Fletcher, treasurer of the local chapter Phi Beta Sigma Inc.
