    Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (gah-YOOM; born Abdulla Maumoon Khairi; 29 December ) is a Maldivian politician, statesman, diplomat and scholar who served as the 3rd president of the Maldives from to He previously served as the Minister of Transport from to , and as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations from to The longest-serving Maldivian president, Gayoom was the longest-serving leader in Asia.

    Gayoom was born and raised in Malé. After serving as a lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, he returned to the Maldives in and worked as a teacher at Aminiya School.
